post-nova

post-nova The stage following a nova outburst, when the star has returned to a quiescent state. Some decades after the eruption the spectrum remains characteristic, with H I and He I emission, accompanied by high-excitation lines such as He II, C III, and N III. Such a spectrum is sometimes encountered in a star for which no outburst has been observed (a quiescent nova).
