optical double
optical double Two stars that happen to lie close to the same line of sight, and thus appear near each other on the sky. The components of an optical double are at different distances and are not related. An optical double is therefore distinct from a physical double, whose components are bound by gravity. Optical doubles are rarer than true binaries.
