near infrared
near infrared That part of the electromagnetic spectrum covering the shorter infrared wavelengths, but with no well-defined limit at the longer-wavelength end. Broadly, the near infrared extends from the red end of the visible spectrum (approximately 0.7 μm, or 700 nm) to about 35 μm. In practice, the term is often used to describe the
infrared windows in the atmosphere between 1 and 5 μm. The 0.7–1.0 μm region is sometimes known as the
photographic infrared.
