long-period variable

long-period variable (LPV) A red-giant pulsating variable, with a well-defined period in excess of 100 days, otherwise known as a Mira star. The term was previously applied to any late-type variable with a long period, including the types currently known as RV Tauri stars and semiregular variables, but it is now generally restricted to the Mira type.
