galactic equator

galactic equator A great circle on the celestial sphere marking the plane of our Galaxy, running along the Milky Way. It is the reference plane for galactic coordinates. The galactic equator is inclined at about 63° to the celestial equator, a result of the orientation of the Solar System within the Galaxy.
