gain The factor by which a signal is amplified, often expressed in decibels (symbol dB). The gain of an antenna is a measure of how directional it is, and is related to directivity. It is equal to the signal strength in the direction of maximum sensitivity divided by the signal strength that would be received, either by an antenna equally sensitive in all directions, or (in an alternative definition) by a half-wave dipole.
