flux tube A linear region of intensified magnetic field. Flux tubes are thought to be produced within the Sun as the differential rotation winds up the general solar magnetic field. Sunspots are then produced when such a flux tube intersects the Sun's surface. The interaction of Io with a flux tube around Jupiter produces radio emission at wavelengths of tens of metres.
