far infrared The longer wavelengths of the infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Although ill-defined, the far-infrared is generally taken to cover wavelengths of about 35–300 μm, which are blocked by the Earth's atmosphere. The region between 300 μm and 1 mm, which is accessible from high mountain observatories, is now often referred to as the
submillimetre band.
