dedispersion
dedispersion A technique used in radio astronomy to compensate for the smearing effect of interstellar
dispersion (2). The radio band being observed is divided into many narrow channels, each of which is measured separately. Provided the dispersion measure of the source is known, appropriate time delays can be introduced between the channels to remove the dispersive delay across the band. The signals from the channels are then recombined to form a dedispersed signal. Dedispersion is widely used for the observation of pulsars, whose narrow pulses are readily smeared out by interstellar dispersion.
