catadioptric system
catadioptric system An optical system in which mirrors and lenses bring light to a focus. The best-known catadioptric designs are the
Schmidt–Cassegrain and
Maksutov telescopes, in both of which the incoming beam passes through a transparent
corrector plate. Alternative designs, such as the
Sampson catadioptric, may use smaller lenses in the converging beam to correct some of the aberrations that would otherwise be present.
