absorption coefficient
A Dictionary of Astronomy | Date: 1997
absorption coefficient A measure of the decrease in intensity of radiation as it passes through a medium. It is the reciprocal of the distance required to reduce the radiation to 1/
e of its original value (where
e is a constant equal to 2.718).

Measurement method for determining absorption coefficients for underground mines
Mining Engineering; 11/1/2007; Kovalchik, P; Matetic, R; Peng, S; Cole, G; 787 words
; Abstract Previous studies conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have shown that approximately 90 percent of coal miners and 49 percent of metal/nonmetal miners had a hearing impairment by age 50 (Franks, 1997). Mine workers are exposed to additional noise

Understanding sealers for natural stone surfaces.(THE STONE SHOP.)
Solid Surface; 1/1/2005; Hueston, Frederick M.; 787 words
; Does all natural stone need to be sealed? This is a question that not even the experts agree on. Some say that certain granites are so dense that sealing them is not necessary. Others say that all stone needs to be sealed regardless of its density and porosity. Because we are not all geologists and

A Refined Method of Parameterizing Absorption Coefficients among Multiple Gases Simultaneously from Line-by-Line Data
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences; 2/1/2005; Jacobson, Mark Z; 787 words
; ABSTRACT An extension of the correlated-k distribution method that uses spectral-mapping techniques was derived to parameterize line-by-line absorption coefficients for multiple gases simultaneously for use in three-dimensional atmospheric models. In a variation from previous correlation

A Radiation Algorithm with Correlated-k Distribution. Part I: Local Thermal Equilibrium
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences; 2/1/2005; Li, J; Barker, H W; 787 words
; ABSTRACT A new radiation scheme is proposed that uses the correlaled-k distribution (CKD) method. The definition of the k-distribution function, the transformation between frequency space and k space, and the upper limit of the absorption coefficient in cumulative probability space (CPS) are

Arctic Mixed-Phase Cloud Properties from AERI Lidar Observations: Algorithm and Results from SHEBA
Journal of Applied Meteorology; 4/1/2005; Turner, D D; 787 words
; ABSTRACT A new approach to retrieve microphysical properties from mixed-phase Arctic clouds is presented. This mixed-phase cloud property retrieval algorithm (MIXCRA) retrieves cloud optical depth, ice fraction, and the effective radius of the water and ice particles from ground-based,
