Weizsäcker, CarlFriedrich von (1912–2007)Germantheoretical physicist and philosopher. In 1938, independently of H. A.Bethe, he proposed that stars generate their energy via the carbon–nitrogen cycle, converting hydrogen into helium by nuclear fusion. In 1944 he set out a modern version of the nebular hypothesis proposed in the 18th century, first by I.Kant and later by P. S. deLaplace, to account for the origin of the Solar System.
