Tully–Fisher relation
Tully–Fisher relation An observed correlation between the width of the 21-cm hydrogen line from spiral galaxies, caused by their rotation, and their absolute magnitude. This correlation can be exploited to measure the relative distances of spiral galaxies. It was first published in 1977 by the Canadian astronomer R(ichard) Brent Tully (1943– ) and the American astronomer J(ames) Richard Fisher (1943– ).
