Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer

Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) A NASA satellite launched in 1995December. It carries a large array of proportional counters, nearly a metre square, to study X-rays of 2–200 keV (0.006–0.6 nm). RXTE uses its Proportional Counter Array (PCA) and High Energy X-ray Timing Experiment (HEXTE) to study the variability of the thousand or so brightest X-ray sources at time-scales down to 10 μ s. Another instrument, the All-Sky Monitor (ASM), scans the sky every 100 min. It is named after B. B.Rossi.
