Pan‐STARRS
Pan‐STARRS An array of four 1.8‐m telescopes under construction to detect and track
potentially hazardous asteroids; the name is short for Panoramic Survey Telescope & Rapid Response System. The first telescope, PS1, began operation on Haleakala, Hawaii, in 2006. The final array, which may be sited at
Mauna Kea Observatories, is expected to be operational in 2010 and will scan all the sky visible from Hawaii three times per month. In addition to near‐Earth objects, Pan‐STARRS will locate many other asteroids, comets, and Kuiper Belt objects, as well as building up a massive database of stars and galaxies.
