Maxwell, JamesClerk
Maxwell, JamesClerk (1831–79)Scottishphysicist. In the late 1850s he explained that Saturn's rings must consist of many small objects following independent concentric orbits, and that a solid or fluid ring would be unstable. Of his many contributions to theoretical physics, the most important is perhaps the concept of
electromagnetic radiation. In 1865 he published what are now called
Maxwell's equations, which unify the phenomena of electricity and magnetism into a single theory.
