Mather, JohnCromwell (1946– )Americanastrophysicist and cosmologist. He was the driving force behind the
Cosmic Background Explorer (
COBE), coordinating both the proposal and the thousand‐strong mission team, and had specific responsibility for the Far‐Infrared Absolute Spectrophotometer on board COBE, the instrument which showed that the cosmic microwave background radiation has a black‐body spectrum. For this work he shared the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physics with G.
Smoot.
