Laplace, PierreSimon de
Laplace, PierreSimon de (1749–1827)Frenchmathematician and astronomer. He established celestial mechanics as a mathematical discipline, applying Newton's theory of gravitation to the study of orbits, perturbations, and stability in the Solar System. He explained the small, long-term variations in the orbital speeds of Jupiter and Saturn (1786) and the Moon (1787). His nebular hypothesis of the Solar System's origin (1796), in which planets condense from different zones in a nebula, is similar to I.
Kant's theory, of which he was apparently unaware. Laplace's
Traité de mécanique céleste (published 1799–1825) is a summary of 18th-century celestial mechanics.
