Lagrange, JosephLouis de
Lagrange, JosephLouis de(- Louis de Tournier) (1736–1813)Frenchmathematician, born in Italy. In celestial mechanics he studied perturbations and stability in the Solar System. He examined the
three-body problem for the Earth, Moon, and Sun (1764) and the motion of Jupiter's satellites (1766). In 1772 he found the particular solutions to the problem that give rise to the equilibrium positions now called
Lagrangian points. Lagrange also studied the Moon's libration.
