Kuiper Airborne Observatory
Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO) A NASA Lockheed C-141 transport aircraft modified to carry a 0.91-m Cassegrain reflector for infrared astronomy. The KAO operated from 1975 to 1995 and flew at altitudes of up to 13.7 km. Its replacement is the
Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (
SOFIA). The KAO was named after G. P.
Kuiper.
