Herschel Space Observatory

Herschel Space Observatory (HSO) An ESA spacecraft carrying a 3.5-m telescope for imaging and spectroscopy at far-infrared and submillimetre wavelengths, from 60 to 670 μm, a part of the spectrum not previously covered. It will be stationed at the L2Lagrangian point, 1.5 million km from Earth in the direction away from the Sun. HSO is named after W.Herschel, the discoverer of infrared light. HSO will be launched in 2008 on the same rocket as Planck, another ESA scientific mission, but the two will separate once in space and operate independently. http://sci.esa.int/herschel
