Galileo A NASA space mission to Jupiter, launched in 1989October. It used a gravity-assist trajectory that involved one fly-by of Venus and two of the Earth. Galileo encountered two asteroids, Gaspra in 1991October and Ida in 1993August, before arriving at Jupiter in 1995December. An atmospheric entry probe parachuted down through the clouds of Jupiter, transmitting data for 58 min, while the main craft went into orbit, surveying the planet's weather patterns and satellites for seven years, finally burning up in the planet's atmosphere in 2003September.
