Eros Asteroid 433, discovered in 1898 by the German astronomer Gustav Witt (1866–1946) and independently on the same day by the Frenchman Auguste Charlois (1864–1910). Eros was the first known asteroid with an orbit that brings it within the orbit of Mars; it is a member of the
Amor group. The
NEAR Shoemaker space probe went into orbit around Eros in 2000 February, photographing its ancient, cratered surface. Eros is highly elongated, 33 × 13 × 13 km, with a mass of 6.7 × 10
15kg and a density of 2.7. It is of S class, with a rotation period of 5.27 hours. Its orbit has a semimajor axis of 1.458 AU, period 1.76 years, perihelion 1.13 AU, aphelion 1.78 AU, and inclination 10°.8.
