Cybele group
Cybele group A group of asteroids, often called the Cybeles, in the outer part of the main asteroid belt at a mean distance of 3.4 AU from the Sun, between the 2:1 and 5:3 Jovian resonances. The Cybeles, in common with the
Trojan asteroids, the
Hilda group, and the asteroid
Thule, are thought to be remnants of the primordial population at their respective distances. The group is named after the P-class asteroid (65) Cybele, diameter 308 km, discovered in 1861 by the German astronomer Ernst Wilhelm Lebrecht Tempel (1821–89). Cybele's orbit has a semimajor axis of 3.437 AU, period 6.37 years, perihelion 3.08 AU, aphelion 3.79 AU, and inclination 3°.5.
