California Nebula

California Nebula The diffuse nebula NGC 1499 in Perseus. In shape, it resembles the US state of California, having a length of 2½° and a maximum width of 2/3°. It is faint and best seen on long-exposure photographs. It is illuminated by the hot 07 star Xi Persei, magnitude 4.0.
