Apollo project The American space programme to land humans on the Moon. The three-seater Apollo spacecraft were launched to the Moon by Saturn V rockets. In orbit around the Moon, two astronauts entered the Lunar Module and descended to the surface. After four manned test flights, the first manned landing was made on 1969July20 by Neil Alden Armstrong (1930– ) and Edwin Eugene ‘Buzz’ Aldrin (1930– ) during the Apollo 11 mission. On subsequent missions, astronauts spent longer on the lunar surface and were able to explore greater distances by means of an electrically powered lunar rover. A total of 381 kg of rock samples was brought back by the Apollo astronauts. (See Table 1, Appendix.)
