diencephalon The most anterior region of the brain stem, part of the prosencephalon. In amniotes, the diencephalon forms a major relay between the sensory areas and higher brain centres via the thalamus. Optic nerves develop from this region. The base of the diencephalon forms the hypothalamus and a ventral outgrowth forms the pituitary gland. The diencephalon is thought to have evolved from the median photoreceptor of plesiomorphic vertebrates.
