Upupidae

Upupidae (hoopoe; class Aves, order Coraciiformes) A monospecific family (Upupa epops), which is a pinkish, chestnut bird with black and white banded back, wings, and tail. It has a long, distinctive, black-tipped crest, a long, slender, decurved bill, broad, rounded wings, and a medium-length, square tail. Its legs are short with long toes, the third and fourth being fused basally. It inhabits fairly open country and cultivated land, feeds mainly on insects, and nests in holes in trees and banks. It is migratory, and is found in Europe, Africa, and Asia.
