Traguloidea

Traguloidea (suborder Ruminantia, infra-order Pecora) A superfamily that comprises the Tragulidae and the extinct families Hypertragulidae, Protoceratidae, and Gelocidae, primitive pecorans which lived between the Eocene and Pliocene. The hypertragulids lived mainly in N. America and departed from the general form in the development of a lower premolar that functioned as a canine. The protoceratids, also from N. America, shared this feature but had longer faces and horns. The gelocids lived in the Old World during the Oligocene and may have been transitional forms directly ancestral to the modern pecorans.
