Piciformes (jacamars, puffbirds, barbets, honeyguides, toucans, woodpeckers; class Aves) An order of small to fairly large birds which have brightly coloured plumage. The bills of each family are stout and characteristically shaped, and their toes zygodactylous. They are mainly arboreal, feed on vegetable matter and animals, and nest in holes; one family is brood parasitic. There are six families, found world-wide.
