Linnaeus, Carolus
Linnaeus, Carolus (1707–78) The Swedish botanist and physician who became lecturer in botany at the University of Uppsala in 1730 and who, in 1735, published his
Systema naturae. The 10th edition of this, published in 1758, is taken as the starting-point of the method of
binomial classification. As he wrote in Latin, the latinized form of his name has often been mistaken as his real name. In 1761 he was raised to the nobility (the honour was backdated to 1757), from which time he was known as Carl von Linné.
