Formicinae
A Dictionary of Zoology
Formicinae (suborder Apocrita, family Formicidae) Subfamily of ants which have a single
petiole segment. The tip of the
gaster is armed with an acidopore through which venom containing formic acid is ejected. The subfamily includes the weaver ants. There are about 5000 species, with a world-wide distribution. See also
