Dermestidae(skin beetles, hide beetles, tallow beetles, museum beetles; class Insecta, order Coleoptera) Family of black or brown, small beetles, often with a pattern of fine hairs or scales, in which the pronotum is strongly narrowed toward the head, and the antennae are clubbed. Dermestidae occur in flowers, feeding on pollen. The larvae are subcylindrical, and covered with long hair. Anthrenus larvae (woolly bears or carpet beetles) attack woollen carpets, furs, and dried museum specimens. Dermestes lardarius larvae (bacon beetles or larder beetles) attack furs, hides, and stored meat and cheese. There are 731 species, occurring worldwide.
