Aegyptopithecus zeuxis
Aegyptopithecus zeuxis A genus and species of early
catarrhine Primates, known from abundant remains, including several nearly complete skulls, from the early
Oligocene of the Jebel al-Qatrani Formation, Fayum, Egypt. The size of a small, living monkey, it had a long tail and could jump from branch to branch. It possessed the dental and some of the cranial characteristics of living catarrhines, but lacked many of the other cranial and most of the postcranial diagnostic features, and so represents a time when catarrhines had separated from other primates, but remained more primitive than living hominoids (
Hominoidea) or cercopithecoids (
Cercopithecoidea) and it could have been ancestral to living catarrhines.
