Álvarez Quintero, Serafín

Álvarez Quintero, Serafín (1871–1938) and Joaquín (1873–1944), Spanish dramatists, brothers and collaborators in about 200 light comedies based on the characteristic life and customs of Andalusia and suffused with kindly tolerance and gentle good humour. Several of them were translated into English by Helen and Harley Granville-Barker, of which Fortunato and The Lady from Alfaqueque (New York, 1929) were produced in London in 1928 with John Gielgud in the leading roles. A Hundred Years Old (New York, 1939) was also seen in London in 1928, followed by The Women Have Their Way (1933; New York, 1939), Doña Clarines (1934), and Don Abel Writes a Tragedy (1944).
