Yermolova, Maria Nikolaievna (1853–1928), Russian tragic actress, considered by Stanislavsky the finest he had ever seen. She made her début in 1870 at the Maly Theatre in Moscow as Emilia Galotti in Lessing's play of that name, and soon proved herself an outstanding interpreter of such roles as Lady Macbeth, Joan of Arc in Schiller's Die Jungfrau von Orleans, and Racine's Phèdre. In contrast to the somewhat passive and unreal playing of such characters at the time, she made her heroines active, independent members of society. Having weathered the storms of the Russian Revolution, which she welcomed, she celebrated her stage jubilee in 1920 with full Soviet ceremonial and the honour of being named People's Artist of the Republic. A studio named after her in 1930 later became the Yermolova Theatre.
