West Yorkshire Playhouse

West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds, regional theatre opened in 1990 on a prime site in the city centre. It replaced Leeds Playhouse, which opened in 1970 on a temporary site provided by the university. The new theatre presents classics and new writing, the opening season including two world premières and a British première, as well as Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel, Shaw's You Never Can Tell, and Neil Simon's Brighton Beach Memoirs. There are two auditoriums: the Quarry Theatre, seating 750, with an open thrust stage and a steep rake, which opened with O'Keeffe's Wild Oats; and the flexible Courtyard Theatre, seating up to 350. The theatres also house touring companies, and there are two other performance spaces. There is a strong emphasis on young people's theatre, including an already established Theatre-in-Education scheme, and on forging links with the community.
