Der 24 Februar (The
24th of February, 1810), which established the so-called
fate drama in Germany. Werner was a poet and mystic who became a Roman Catholic priest in Vienna, where he was renowned for his preaching. His other plays, which include
Das Kreuz an der Ostsee (1806),
Martin Luther (1807), and
Kunigunde, die Heilige (1815), bear a strong religious imprint, and mingle scenes of telling realism with weird fantasy. They were among the few German Romantic verse dramas to achieve success on the contemporary stage.
