Viertel, Berthold (1885–1955), Austrian poet, actor, and theatre director, who figures as Friedrich Bergmann in Christopher Isherwood's novel
Prater Violet (1945). After working in Vienna and Dresden, he went to
Berlin in 1922, where he directed
Hebbel's Judith at the
Deutsches Theater for
Reinhardt and achieved a great success with a production of Bronnen's
Vatermord (
Patricide). He then founded his own company, Die Truppe, but in 1927 left Germany, being in London from 1933 to 1937 and then in the USA where he worked in Hollywood and in 1945 produced in New York
Brecht's Furcht und Elend des Drittes Reiches as
The Private Life of the Master Race. In 1949 he returned to Berlin, producing
Gorky's Vassa Zheleznova for the
Berliner Ensemble, and in 1951 became a director at the
Vienna Burgtheater, where among his productions was Tennessee
Williams's A Streetcar Named Desire.
