Vezin, Hermann (1829–1910), English actor, born in the USA, who moved to England in 1850 and remained there until his death. After working for a time in the provinces, he took over the
Surrey Theatre and appeared in a number of classic parts. Samuel
Phelps then engaged him for
Sadler's Wells, and by 1861 he was recognized as an outstanding actor in both comedy and tragedy, his best parts being Macbeth, Othello, Jaques in
As You Like It, and Sir Peter Teazle in Sheridan's
The School for Scandal. He played opposite Ellen
Terry in
Olivia (1878), a dramatization of
Goldsmith's novel
The Vicar of Wakefield, and was for a time in Irving's company at the
Lyceum. He made his last appearance under Tree in 1909, playing Rowley in
The School for Scandal. A scholarly man, of small stature, with clear-cut features and a dignified bearing, he was remarkable for the beauty and clarity of his diction, and lacked only warmth and personal magnetism.
