Verismo, Italian cultural movement of the later 19th century, having affinities with French
naturalism. Subject to multiple critical interpretations, the term evades precise definition, but in general the movement constituted a reaction against the Italian academic and rhetorical tradition in favour of an objective exploration of the immediate problems of urban bourgeois and provincial society. Such an exploration was inextricably linked to an awareness of the political and social realities that came in the aftermath of the Risorgimento. One notable exponent of
verismo in the theatre was Giuseppe
Giacosa, and later dramatists, among them
Pirandello and
D'Annunzio, were veristic in their early writings. But perhaps the richest achievements of
verismo were in the field of regional literature, and are to be found in the work of such writers as
Verga.
