Trenev, Konstantin Andreivich

Trenev, Konstantin Andreivich (1884–1945), Soviet dramatist and short-story writer, whose first play, dealing with an 18th-century peasant insurrection, was staged by the Moscow Art Theatre in 1925. In 1926 the Maly Theatre, Moscow, produced the first version of his Lyubov Yarovaya, which, after intensive alterations, became one of the outstanding productions of the Moscow Art Theatre in 1937. The story of a school teacher in the Revolution, caught between love for her White Russian husband and loyalty to her ideals, it became popular all over the USSR and is still acted today. Trenev also wrote On the Banks of the Neva (1937), one of the first Soviet plays to bring Lenin on to the stage. His later plays include Anna Luchinina (1941), Meeting Halfway (1942), and The General (1944), in which the chief character is the famous Russian Field-Marshal Kutuzov (1745–1813).
