Traverse Theatre

Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, lively experimental theatre which opened in 1963. The original auditorium held 60 seated on either side of the acting area, but in 1969 the company moved to new premises in the Grassmarket with a multi-purpose acting area and a seating capacity of up to 120, to which a second studio space was later added. The Traverse develops new work in all areas of theatre. It has given the first productions in English of many foreign plays, including works by Arrabal, Jarry, Mrozek, and Peter Weiss. It has also had a particularly close relationship with Scottish dramatists such as C. P. Taylor. The contributions of the Traverse to the Edinburgh Festival have included numerous British and world premières. The theatre also plays host to Fringe groups from all over the world, and its own productions have been seen in London, Amsterdam, the USA, Canada, Israel, and Australia. In 1992 the Traverse moved to a new location, Britain's first purpose-built theatre for new writing, with performance spaces seating 250 and 100.
