Tragi-comedy, bastard form of tragedy, being a play dealing with a tragic story which ends unhappily, but which contains certain elements of comedy and the remote possibility of a happy ending. Some critics have classified
Hamlet (
c.1600–1) as a tragi-comedy, but the perfect example of the type is Corneille's
Le Cid (1637). In France tragi-comedy was important until the mid-17th century,
Garnier and
Hardy being especially associated with the genre.
