Topol, Chaim

Topol, Chaim (1934– ), Israeli actor, who had his first experience of acting while in the army, and afterwards founded a theatre of satire in Tel Aviv which achieved widespread popularity. In 1961 he went to Haifa to help establish the Municipal Theatre there, acting as assistant to the director and appearing with the company at the Venice Biennale as Azdak in Brecht's The Caucasian Chalk Circle, repeating the role at Chichester in 1969. He also played such parts as Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew, Pat in Brendan Behan's The Hostage, John in Ionesco's Rhinoceros, and the Soldier in Frisch's Andorra. In 1965 he was with the Cameri Theatre in Tel Aviv, and in 1967 he appeared in London as Tevye in the musical Fiddler on the Roof in which he scored an immense success, returning in the role in 1983. In 1988 he took over the title-role in the musical Ziegfeld at the London Palladium, but failed to revive its flagging fortunes.
