Thaddädl

Thaddädl, last Viennese comic figure in the tradition of Hanswurst, created by the Austrian actor Anton Hasenhut (1766–1841). Based on Taddeo, a German importation into the commedia dell'arte, Thaddädl was a clumsy youth with a falsetto voice, a perpetually infatuated, idiotically infantile booby. Although much admired by Grillparzer, among others, the character never achieved universal popularity, and was soon forgotten. The role at its best is found in Kringsterner's Der Zwirnhändler (The String Merchant, 1801).
