Tetralogy. In the ancient Greek Dionysia each dramatic poet was originally supposed to submit for production and competition four plays on the same theme, character, or family, consisting of a trilogy of tragic plays followed by a burlesque of the main theme in a satyr-drama. This rule was followed by Aeschylus, whose Oresteia is the only true trilogy to survive, and it is reasonable to suppose that the satyr-drama which followed it dealt also with the House of Atreus; also that the surviving play Prometheus Bound was the first of a trilogy on Prometheus. Later dramatists ignored the unity of subject, and submitted ‘pseudo-tetralogies’, in which all four plays dealt with different subjects.
