Terry, Benjamin (1818–96), English actor, son of an innkeeper at Portsmouth, who with his wife,
Sarah Ballard (1817–92), went on the stage, touring extensively in the provinces and later playing small parts with Charles
Kean at the
Princess's, where his young children were in the company and his wife helped in the wardrobe. He had 11 children, of whom five went on the stage— Ellen, Fred, Kate, and Marion (below), and
Florence (1855–96)—while two sons,
George (1850–1928) and
Charles (1857–1933), were connected with theatre management.
