Teatro Olimpico

Teatro Olimpico, Vicenza, outstanding example of academic Italian Renaissance theatre architecture. Designed by Palladio and completed after his death by his pupil Scamozzi, it opened in 1585 with a production of Sophocles' Oedipus the King in a new translation. The building, which still stands, was based strictly on the contemporary neo-classical idea of a Greek theatre, formulated by Vitruvius, and in spite of its splendour it had little or no influence on the development of later theatre buildings in Italy.
