Tarkington, (Newton) Booth (1869–1946), American novelist, and author of a number of plays, of which the best known is the romantic costume drama Monsieur Beaucaire (1901). Based in collaboration on his novel of the same title, this was spoilt artistically by the substitution of a conventionally happy ending for the ironic ending implicit in the book. It was nevertheless very successful in America, with Richard Mansfield in the name part, and also in London, where it later provided the libretto for a musical play with a score by Messager. Among Tarkington's other plays were two for Otis Skinner, Your Humble Servant (1910) and Mr Antonio (1916); a charming comedy of youth entitled Clarence (1919); and a social drama on the theme of snobbery, Tweedles (1923), which failed in production.
